“I’m glad I killed the dog,” William Whitson, 45, allegedly told police
Whitson, is being held without bail until a dangerousness hearing next Friday in Fall River District Court. Meanwhile, Smokey, a three-year-old American pit bull terrier, is still alive, though in serious condition after undergoing emergency surgery last night at Mass-RI Veterinary ER in Swansea.
Fall River police have charged William Whitson with cruelty to an animal.
Heather Lemieux, the pit bull’s owner, said Smokey will be sedated for a few days. She does not know if he will pull through.“He’s my 8-year-old son’s best friend. He couldn’t go to school today because of this,” Lemieux said.
Lampe said the dog had surgery to control the bleeding and close wounds. She said one penetrating chest wound resulted in a partially collapsed lung that has remained stable without having to do any definitive treatment.
“He’s currently resting and on antibiotics and pain medication,” Lampe said.
Lemieux said she is looking to start a GoFundMe online account to help cover Smokey’s medical expenses, which she estimated could run over $3,000.“I gotta save my dog,” she said.Anyone interested in donating to the cost of the veterinary care for Smokey is asked to contact the Mass-RI Veterinary ER at 508-730-1112.
